A bridge To Fm Wiseman's Cove

A bridge To Wiseman's Cove by James Moloney.
This book is about a boy named Carl who is abandoned by his family; left with his bother and forced to live with his Aunt Beryl. He is a shy boy that is really conscious about his appearance and the fact that he is overweight. He never had the confidence in himself especially when talking to girls. This story tells us about the many changes that occur in different characters' lives. The main characters of the story are Kerry Mat, unmarried mother of Sarah ( 19 years old), Carl ( 14 years old) and Harley (10 years old). She leaves for a small holidays leaving her children to fend for themselves. When she stays longer more than usual, Sarah is forced to look after her brothers. She takes them to wattle beach to their Aunt Beryl and then runs away. Aunt beryl never used to treat Carl and Harley well. She used to waste money and time in the local club. Later Carl found a job on the Barge that wasnt going that good with business. He started having problems with Skip, but Joy, Skips wife forced her husband to leave Carl on the barge for at least for a week. Carl found a way to get the Barge back to work; he opened a free car wash that impressed Skip, and got another chance to stay on the barge. In the city, Carl looked at many photographs of unidentified people killed in accidents, and he recognised Kerry, his mother, as one of nine people killed in a bus accident some months earlier.

I really enjoyed reading this book, cause its full of adventure and little bit of romance.

A New Kind Of Dreaming (Ali)

A New Kind of Dreaming

By Anthony Eaton

A New Kind of Dreaming is a story about a boy called Jamie who is an orphan. His mother died when he was small and his father left them alone so he lives with his imprisoned brother ‘Eddie’. Until one day he goes to a detention centre for bad behaviour. Over there in Port Barren, hundreds of secrets are buried under its dry and red sand. First he feels uncomfortable with the environment because he is sensing the secrets of Port Barren. He meets a boy called Cameron who lives with his family. Cameron tells him dark secrets about Port Barren. He tells him about how the local sergeant Butcher found the refugee ship and who each child disappeared when they tried to discover it. After a few days, Jamie finishes his investigation and comes to a solution that Butcher didn’t just kill the girl in the refugee ship, but also killed the children who tried to put Butcher into trouble. After finding out what Jamie was up to butcher does the same with him, Butcher leaves Jamie to die in the scorching heat of desert but he is rescued by Cameron. After spending a couple of days in the desert they were discovered by two tourists. The tourists helped them back to port Barren. When they reached port Barren they found out that Butcher was waiting for them.

The Whale Rider

I chose this book to blog about because it was time wasting. Some of the things that were boring were the facts that half the book is written in maori, it was very cliché, and it failed in trying to make it sound realistic.

When you flip through the pages and stop and any random one, it would most likely be written in maori. I’m not saying that maori is a boring language, because it’s not. It’s just that if the book is written for ‘the readers’ then it should be written in English so people would actually understand.

While you’re reading the book you sense the common drama, but when reading The Whale Rider it’s so obvious what happens next. There’s one part of the book where she’s communicating with the whales (making weird sounds with her throat) and everyone’s looking at her like, “What the hell?”even though they know she’s a descendent of Paikea, THE WHALE RIDER a.k.a ‘Sea God’

The book is actually a translation of a maroi legend. A man called Paikea rode whales and he made spears turn into birds. A legend is obviously made up, or at least based on some theory or something, but some of the things that were written in the book made no sense. There was a part where Kahu (the main character) rides the whale into the ocean. The whales then don’t want her anymore so they dump her somewhere in the ocean. She’s lost for about 3 days. Isn’t she supposed to die? She could’ve died because of lack of oxygen or she could’ve frozen to death, but no- fishermen found her and she lives. She lives happily ever after. (That’s another reason why it’s cliche)

Iron Soldiers

I chose to write about the story, Iron Soldiers, because i am learning about medieval life and this book is related to that theme. It talks a lot about a black smith's life and the things one would have gone through back in those days. The black smiths in the story are asked to make war suits and everyone knows that back then, the war suits were expensive. Throughout the story, we are shown the advanced changes that were made to the war suits. The complication in this story is when the smiths try to think of a better way of making the suits look professional and how to make them fit the soldiers perfectly. It is then resolved when one of them thinks of making a war suit that is the perfect size and weight for the knight. I would recommend this book for people aged 8 and over because i think history/humanities is not only for secondary school students; it's for everyone. I think this book was a great book!

A New Kind of Dreaming

I chose this book because out of the three books that i had it was my favorite, the title was also different to most other books i had read and i wanted to know what the reason behind this was. The book was called A New Kind of Dreaming by Anthony Eaton. I would recommend this book to an age group of 12 and upwards because it had a fairly complicated storyline with lots of twists and some very complex language. I don't think that i would read another book from this author because although i enjoyed this book i like to read books about fantasy and suspense, not so much real life mysteries. This book does not have a movie to accompany it but i think if there was a movie that it would be a very exciting one. This book is based around a character called Jamie, he has been caught in the drivers seat of a stolen car and has been sent off to a very isolated town named Port Barren. In this small town there are a few secrets that best be left undiscovered for the benefit of the town, once Jamie gets word of such secrets he can't control his curiosity to explore. As he ventures deeper and deeper into the mystery of Port Barren things become more and more dangerous, some of the residents of Port Barren would like to keep their secrets hidden.

A Bridge To Wisemans Cove

I have recently read a fascinating book named, A Bridge to Wiseman's Cove. It is about a boy whose name is Carl. He has an older sister, Sarah and a younger brother, Harley from another father. He is a shy person and he does not have the courage to stand up for himself to the girls or anyone else. After their mother leaves them, their lives became difficult because Sarah was not able to keep her eye on the two boys without her mother's help. Because of the struggles, she decides to dump her brothers and leave them with their Aunt Beryl who lived some kilometres away from Wiseman's cove. When they moved to live in with their aunt, nobody liked them because of a bad incident that happened in their family years back. At the beginning, aunt Beryl treated them nicely and cared about them but we find out later that it was all an act and she was caring for them only because of the money that she got from social security. I would love to read another book by the same author because the books that I have read by him are interesting and contain out-of-the-ordinary events.
